January 6 Report

Postby kendalloz » Fri Jan 06, 2012 7:18 pm

Went out with fellow VCFA pal Mike Lahorner today. Long story short we covered a lot of ground looking for fly-fish-able stripers. Found beehives of Gannets alone (no other birds... bad sign) in the Bay but it was all bait no predators. Worked back to Cape Henry there were literally 300 boats trolling we saw one fish landed. We moved inshore and marked a lot of fish but could not buy a bite. The fish were deep (over 30 feet) on the bottom strong current very tough to fly fish. Plus they were not eating so it seemed. Heard of one bluefin tuna hooked today. We did enjoy the nice weather and some whale watching. There is a ton of bait out there.....

Glad you got out Kendal. I was supposed to go bluefin fishing yesterday but had daddy duty so had to bail. Know of 3 that were hooked with one or 2 landed. Been like that the last few days. I hope to be out on Friday and Saturday looking for the bft's, but not sure about the weather forecast.
