Cutthroat hybrid

Postby Riprock » Mon Apr 16, 2012 4:55 pm

The Gunnison River between Crested Butte and Gunnison, CO, is usually overlooked among the legendary western rivers but when the weather warms and snow begins to melt, it can be awesome with large and voracious fish. Colorado had about one-third the normal snow pack this year so ice came off early. I didn't time a short trip very well for skiing, but the fishing was outstanding.

I caught this 4.5 pound (according to guide) cutbow (bottom photo) on a #16 stonefly nymph that was the dropper to some kind of big, ugly nymph, giant stone maybe. Four split shot were above the flies all under a Thingamobber indicator for the fast water. Also caught browns and rainbows. Draggonfly Outfitters in Crested Butte hooked me up with Patrick Duke who knew where these big guys hang out.

Where on the Gunni were you fishing? I lived in Aspen and fished that river several times
