Major midge hatch in PA

Postby Emerson » Fri Mar 23, 2012 6:16 pm

OK..here is the deal...light weight rod...4, 5,6 weight. Next you need a 9 ft leader with a 7X..yes 7X tippet...SOBX...we are talking 2 lbs. No Bass master sets...just a gentle pull and let the rod do the rest. Actually the same way the marlin is done...do not reel or start putting pressure on...let it go then try to gain some ground.
Flies...all black #26 tied in reverse..that means hackle around the bend as opposed to the eye. I cut my hackle down. I trill it behind my big fly...as #20 snow shoe rabbit emerger. Sometimes that gets eaten as well.
The place...the Tuplehocken Creek west of Reading, PA

The fish start to rise just around daybreak...for me it is a 1 hour drive. The foggy mornings the last couple of days have been purrrrrfect. Thursday they rose from daybreak to after 1 pm. Friday..not so lucky...daybreak until 10:30.

Here is what it looks like in the fog...B-Ute-TE-FULLLL

We call these rainbows footballs..they have been in the stream a few years and might only be 16" long but are huge in the belly   ....maybe that is why I like them..plus super strong

Superb... I've never been an advocate of purdy flies. When carping, I often stomp my flies in the mud prior to delivery.

That last fish looks like it's yelling for help. Understandable.

I did crack up when I went up there and got a few fish. That is exactly what I was thinking. Ha ha
