Richmond folks... looking for advice on shad

Postby Siessmack » Thu Feb 02, 2012 11:21 pm

This will be my first go round for shad, and from what I hear they run pretty thick in the James. I've got yaks and access, how far up do they go? I live within a 10 minute walk to Belle Isle, do they come up that far? When do they start showing up? What size rod should I throw? I've heard of anything from a 4 to an 8. If anyone wants to join me, I'd be happy to share one of the yaks on an excursion. Thanks in advance!

Go to 14th street takeout. The don't hit much above the first fall line. Actually I believe they don't hit at all, but people have claimed they catch them above the fall line enough for me to not rule it out completely.

You can fish on the southside side of the river near I-95 with the fleet or you can fish near the takeout. Last year though the fishing seemed best well below I95.
Hopefully I will see you out there.

Fishing for shad above the fall line is an extremely low percentage game, but they will hit.
Like mb82 said, since you have a yak, don't waste your time upriver.
20" is not 20 lbs.
