Unexpected species on a San Juan Worm

Postby meatstick » Fri Apr 29, 2011 10:22 am

I went to the Chicamacomico River east of Cambridge ... looking for bluegills and crappies. Left my cam packed in a wet-bag from last carp outing. But you can trust me on this one, I know Emerson will.

Got my fill of panfish, so I decided to tie on a SJW to see what might eat it in this swamp river. I have caught brown bullheads on a SJW before.

I made a cast from the low-bridge and let the tidal movement carry the worm upstream.

After it had sunk a couple of feet "boom" ... a nice fish on. It jumped. What the hell ?
It was a hickory shad. I worked it to the end of the bridge and got down on the gravel to release it. Yep, Hickory ... a nice 17" fish. I walked 1/3 of the way back across the bridge and made another cast. Boom, another hickory. I repeated the catch on 4 more casts. Then things died. Maybe I caught 'em all ? Anyway, they loved that worm.

I have made thousands of casts on this river, using a variety of different flies, and have never caught a hickory there B4. Didn't even know they came up into that water.

Just thought it was odd to take 6 shad "rapid fire" on a SJW. Not just a trout fly.

I believe you! I belive you LJMMMLB...

The SJW is the best!

New contest...what different species can you get on the SJW!

If I tie a monster SJW to a sailfish popper and get a sail...........does it count?  ..good thing Brian is in transit! :o

Does not surprise me. They liked Red flys this year for me.
