March Shad Run?

Postby JoeB » Mon Feb 28, 2011 9:45 am

Hey guys,
Talk to me about the Shad run in Weldon(I think)?? I think I've been there once with the kayak and it was a pretty rough outing with the current flow, etc. But be that as it may, I' hooked anyway and am looking for info about times, trips, the correct water conditions, flow rates, etc. Any and all information appreciated. Got a 6# and 250gr that needs to get bent something fierce.
Joe

Joe if I remember correctly once they set the discharge rate for the shad and stripers it stays the same until they are done spawning. 6wt and 250gr are ideal for it. I hope to get down there sometime as well. Let me know if you want company.

Yup. Company would be good. We need to work something out before the last week of March, then my schedule gets REALLY bad for a month.

Joe, I have been for the last few years. About 2 years ago, I already had 2 other fly fishers in the boat so no room for a fourth caster but a friend went in his kayak. The fishing from a kayak went ok, bring an anchor since sometimes we anchor, sometimes drift. But the current coming back from big rock area to the put-in is doable but a bit of a chore. We towed my friend back to the ramp but after almost asphyxiating him with the exhaust of my old 2-stroke he got in the boat and we just towed the empty kayak.
