Alaska part 1

Postby Emerson » Tue Aug 17, 2010 7:03 pm

6 of the forum members left Aug 5th for a 7 night 8 day float of the Kwethluk River in far western Alaska. We flew from our homes to Anchorage...spent the night and then flew to Bethel, AK. We had to stay here for about 4 hours or more due to rain. As of yesterday, the new record of 30 consecutive days of rain was made, beating the old record made in 1951.

We stayed at Papa Bears in Bethel..

Gets old in a hurry..

then it is off in a Beaver to fly 100 miles south to a tundra lake close to our river..

We found out about the Ted Stevens plane crash via satellite phone..we all can see how this can happen!

Time to set up tents and relax!

Floated down past Breast Mtn after flying above it..

And finally time to catch some fish!

Nice char's head..

This is a chum salmon...these guys spawn and die...the rainbows and char follow behind them to eat the eggs and then eat the decaying flesh.. Before they spawn they are tough fighters..

This year the king run was drastically low, so the rainbows that typically follow them were not as abundant and not as large. Also, the rain made the rivers higher and the clouds made sight fishing very tough. We did have some breaks in the weather though.

Here is a nice char..honestly not as colorful as 2 years ago!
