Mosquito Lagoon/Indian river

Postby 9ft4wt » Wed Apr 22, 2009 1:00 pm

Took a two-day trip in mid-March down to Titusville with the hope of going outside for cobia. Guess what, the wind blew hard both days. Gee, why am I surprised. The guide was geat though, despite poor visibility from the chop, and the clouds he found fish to throw at.

Managed my first two snook --cookie cutter 15-inchers. Pullage from those two little guys even on my 8 wt, left me a little fearful of what a 30-incher would do.

Got a personal best on a black drum --about 8 pounds.

Mostly though had a great time and learned that I got a lot to learn about saltwaterfly fishing. Too many false casts. We chased five-pound jack crevalles across a flat for an hour. Hooked two but they came unbottoned. Mostly though by the time I had made 5-6 false cast to get out to 60 or 70 feet, they were 200 yards down the beach.

On casts beyond that distance, half of them would die at the end with the leader and about 5 feet of line puddling. No good. By the time I got action on the fly the fish were gone.

So much to learn, so little time.
