Fly Fishing the Sound around Hatteras Island?

Postby mkshepherdjr » Sat Feb 20, 2016 9:43 pm

Has anyone done any fly fishing in the Sound around Hatteras?

I've done plenty of fishing down there, but never had any success with my 8 weight.

I'm headed down in April and wondering what all is accessible in the flats on the backside of the island.

Any insight you all have would be much appreciated!

Yes, though never as early as April. I fish summer and early fall. There are reds, trout, flounder and sheeps on various flats. I prefer to fish them via kayak or boat, though you can cover it wading. Clousers, spoon flies and the like. The more grass on the bottom the better.

I was afraid that might be the case. Thanks for the reply Siessmack.

check with local tackle shop to see what is going on in the sound down there. They do not know much about fly fishing but if they are catching stuff on jigs you can catch them on fly
