Thur/Fri fishing

Postby DThimsen » Sun Sep 27, 2009 12:06 pm

Finally had a chance to get to the coast. Left harkers and didn't see much
going on in the hook or jetty area. It was ridiculoulsy calm and hot, and I probably
should have hit the flats for redfish, but I'm kind of focused on albies this time of year.

Crossed the shoals and finally started finding fish around the summerlin wreck.
Lots of albies and spanish hanging with them. They were going up and down
all over the place. Lost lots of flies to the spanish, and had to start being REALLY
patient and throwing to areas that had more albies in the mix. Ended up with
plenty of spanish (2-3 lbs), and no albies. Had a few hookups, but broke them
off. Most of the albies were 5-7 lbs. I had a bad cold, and flat calm with 88F
started getting to me. Bailed about noon after drinking all the water onboard.

Friday was same, except the fish had moved closer to the lighthouse. And the
spanish bigger. I caught a few 4lbers, but saw lots that were near 7lbs. They
were all over the shoals/shark island area. Skunked on the albies again, but
hope to get back next week.

Most of the bait was 1" bay anchovies.

Hey Chuck,

Actually, I think I saw you and Michelle towing your new flats boat just after crossing the bridge (thurs morning). It looked like you'd just fueled up and were heading out. Perfect day and a good tide. I hope you found some shallow water friends. I had plans on Friday to work, but extended the 2 hours of morning fishing to more like 6. I was expecting the storms to roll in mid-morning, but ended up running in just ahead of the 2pm front. That was something. I thought my car was going to wash away on the trip through MHC.

I was hoping to get back soon, but life just intervened. Matthew broke his collarbone today (skateboarding). Doctor visits start tomorrow. The poor guy is a mess.

Save a few albies for me,

Sounds like some good fun, even if the alberts were shy.
Good luck with Matthew's collarbone - that hurts.
Hope it doesn't keep you away from Harker's for too long.

Don, good to hear you got some action. Sorry about Matthew's collarbone.

I'll be starting my weekly HI pilgramage this Friday - let me know the next time you'll be down on a weekend.

Really sorry to hear that Hugh, the albacore/large spanish/AJ Fall fishing has just been cancelled due to the Beaufort and North River bridges being in such bad shape. I would suggest hitting Chesapeake for stripers later in the year or maybe visiting the OBX for some bird watching!

Bring everything from a 6/7wt to some big sticks, JAWS is still around, even on the flats and bait is still thick! should be a great season!!! ;)

Good Fishing!!!
