2017 VCFA House Report #6

Postby fishermike » Fri Oct 20, 2017 7:56 pm

Hi! Another really nice day and great time on the water! :D As soon as we got to the Hook, we were greeted with what turned out to be an advance party of albies. A couple of pods and then nothing for 45 minutes until the tide started running and then all hell broke loose with albies all over the Hook :D . This lasted for a couple of hours and then nothing until around 3 in the afternoon when we ran into lots of them about a mile outside the Hook and a mile off Shackleford, although there were a lot of them in close to shore. We had 2 boats out and one hooked 11 and landed 6 and the other hooked 6 and landed 5, bringing the house total to 97 hooked and 54 landed. We are well ahead of last year and this year is turning out to be another epic one. Lots of albies all over and after the first few days when all they were doing was sipping, the ones we have encountered in the last few days have attacked our flies with a vengeance. Flies of choice with have been surf candies in olive and white, clousers tied sparsely with tan and white crystal flash, bubbleheads and tootie fruitie clousers. Wx is forecast to be nice thru Mon before the big blow on Tues, so we anticipate the patterns of the last couple of days to hold. But I've learned over the years the wx guys down here are often wrong, so we have our fingers crossed. We did cross off a couple more bucket items when we caught two fly lines in the motor, but we were able to get them removed and were not out of action for too long! Tues should be a tying day, so if any of you are in the area and are looking for something to pass the time, come on by and share some of your patterns. Hope to see you all bowed up tomorrow, tight lines, mike

Hi Mike,

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but...

I haven't been down without access to a boat since the ferry system changed over. It does not appear the Island Express Ferry will take you to the Hook and it looks like they are shut down for the season.

Is anyone operating a ferry to the Hook?

Thanks,

Yet another Mike

Hi! We saw the ferry drop off some anglers this morning around 8 at the hook, so I believe the ferry is still operating. They had 5 guys in the boat. Last year when we used the ferry to take us to the hook, they required at least $100 for the trip and they charged $25 per person so you needed 4 people to go or pay the $100 for just one. Hope this helps, tight lines, mike
