Cold Stun Updates

Postby bhorsley » Sun Feb 02, 2014 10:54 am

Hopefully SOBX will us keep informed.
This is a perfect opportunity to slip into discussions about climate change, fisheries politics etc. BUT WE WILL NOT. This has never been the site and you all have never tried to make it the place. That means a lot to me.

If you would like to weight in on NC fisheries Politics go to this site--plenty of lively discussions happening

So how exactly does that work? It is illegal to posses them, or to fish for them?

Cannot answer for NC but in VA the kills have made local TV news. Also heard of a school of reds that got trapped in a tidal pool trying to warm up and got scooped up by humans. On the Eastern Shore of VA. Hope that is not the case. Saw an osprey cruising our cove today amazing to me that they stay here all year and have so far survived this cold! Amazing. It was low tide the bird was definitely checking out the flats.

sounds like it was pretty extensive in NC --Speck season is closed to at least June 15th --

cold events are nothing new --in the 20 plus years of guiding we have fished through many --96 being the worse. We and a great base up on the northern end and hopefully a quick repopulation

Been very sad here in Virginia. Had some big kills. Now some commercial folks have found the surviving schools sunning in the shallows and are catching them all. Same boats go out go out every day to same spot and round them up. Now that word is out recs are going out as well to dip net a limit. It is legal in Virginia. This is not a political comment (boss) just sad that folks will take such advantage. Like shooting ducks on the water. Virginia has closed the speck fishery starting March 1 but many believe that is too late.

Carl Herring, one of (if not the) top speck angler in Virginia, thinks VA needs to close all speck catches, commercial and rec, for all of 2014.

I guess this may be the year to fish for red drum as we got no stripers left and maybe no specks.

Maybe I can get golf lessons from TLT.

Glad our tarpon know enough to swim way south in the winter. I guess a fish that has survived since T-rex was here has a trick or two up its scales. Something to look forward to!
