Rabbit Fur - Zonker Strips

Postby lwflyrod » Mon Jul 27, 2009 5:05 pm

:?: What is the best way to cut rabbit fur into zonker strips.
We have a large piece of Rabbit fur (8" x 10") approx that we want to cut into zonker strips.

Anybody have experience with this? or have found a successful way to do this?

Thanks

Zonker cutting machine?

Actually I have done it with a razor blade and a straightedge. It didn't make great zonkers, it was hard to hold everything straight.

use a clip board to hold it and a straight edge with a razor or xacto knife. must be sharp. Also better to do two cuts and not cut all the fur off by cutting to deep on one pass.

Yeah,
Those are the issues we are having
1. can't keep the cuts straight.
2. Cut too deep and cut the fur.
3. Makes a huge mess.

Just hoping someone has a better method,
I thought about using one of the rolliing cutters the ladies use for making quilts but find the blades are not sharp enough, Exact-o or NEW razor blades cut good.
May have to try the clip board thing,
Just not sure how to part the hairs.
Thanks

I have never done it but it would seem to me that if you part the hair right down to the hide and cut down that "trough" with a scissor you would not cut the hair and get a clean even cut. The first cut at the end or side of the hide might be a throw away but after that, I would imagine, if you are careful about the setup your cuts would be straight and clean. I would try using an old school ruler to hold down the hair. Like I said, its not something I have done myself but I can envision doing it that way. Good luck.

I've got a few skins myself I would like to make into strips and have tried once before making a big mess. My suggestion would be to use a clip board, and stick the skin under the clip with the fur against the board and tanned hide out. Then take a piece of duct tape and stretch the hide down and tape it to the clip board tight. (assuming the tape will stick to the tanned hide) Then use the razor blade to cut the hide into strips. I'm guessing it would be easier this way and hopefully less mess, again I haven't tried it yet but it's an idea.
