Catch and release on 2-4-12

Postby toddkfly » Sun Feb 05, 2012 12:41 pm

Took us a while to find the fish but it paid off. Bite lasted for 30-40 min then it was done. Biggest bass on my boat to date. Just under 50 lbs on 20lb. spinning gear. Congrats to my friend Matt on his biggest striper ever. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Virginia ... 9196375996

Todd...Awesome. I heard the bite was from Wolf Trap down. Care to kiss and tell? I may go hunting on Sunday.

Tom,

I drove over the CBBT yesterday (had been scouting on the seaside taking advantage of low clear water) and there was a MASSIVE beehive west of the highrise. It was a mix of birds which is always a good sign.

I fished Monday... did a lot of running and looking and got skunked. Found a big beehive of gannets about 8 miles north of the bay bridge but didn't find or even mark a fish under them. All day we saw thousands of gannets flying south, it was wild.

jsaunders, Many of us hear you. While the "overall" new year season has been better than normal in the ocean due to milder temps and fish hanging around, it has been very tough some days and especially tough for fly anglers. I only know 1 guy who caught stripers on fly in the ocean this year. it was early when some bluefish were around as well. He also had 5 or 6 skunk days since. There is more bait than any of us have ever seen....literally miles of huge bunker. Great whale watching. The stripers we mark stay on the bottom. Sometimes you can catch fish on fly 50-feet down but if the wind and current are strong and the fish not aggressive...oh well. Seems like maybe the fish have food in front of their faces 24-7 so they never blitz and push the bait up or move up in the water column themselves. The trollers get some but they might be "instinct" bites....a full striper sees a stretch move by its face and it makes a reaction bite. If you read between the lines you will see a lot of the trollers who get a "limit" of fish have fished all day for 4 or 6 fish. On a "good" day. Tough to do with a fly. There have also been huge gannet beehives in shallow water....there is so much bait the gannets are going off and no stripers are around. Yes a lot of fish have been caught this year but also a whole lot of skunk days.

However. I heard today was good 2 miles east of Cape Henry. Aggressive fish that would hit readily. Did not hear of any on fly but sounded like conditions may have made a fly work.

We have seen a bunch of Gannets down this way with nothing but bait underneath... no stipers even close...
