Hot Ditch Report -2.5 minute video

Postby kendalloz » Fri Dec 10, 2010 8:40 pm

Got a few small specks on fly today in the ditch. Nothin' big but it beats not fishing and not catching anything!

Yes that is the Benny Hill music!

Entrance of the Gladiators seems fitting as theme music.
Glad to see you got into some fish. I haven't been over to the Ditch yet this year, but I've caught tons of those small seatrout in my other usual spots.

It was fairly busy last Friday, for a weekday, but that was to expected as the wind quit and it finally got above 40 degrees outside. But, there were still plenty of places to fish. I did not get any big ones Friday but a friend got a 6.5 pounder on a plug. I hope to go back later in the week. :D

Video location looks familiar; is the "hot ditch" the 'creek' which extends to the NW from the I-64 bridge about a mile or so W of the I-464/168 exit?

It is the southern branch of the Elizabeth River in Chesapeake VA. The hot ditch area is generally from the Rt 13/460 Military Highway/Gilmerton Bridge south to the Great Bridge locks and west to Deep Creek Park (if that is what it is called). The "ditch" itself is a man-made "ditch" that comes out of the power plant into a creek just north of the I64 high rise bridge. Hot water from the powerplant comes out the ditch. Depending on hot water output and temp the fish can be anywhere in the ditch area. If you launch at Chesapeake Yachts you are literally there and can start fishing anyplace in either direction from the ramp. I usually look for a surface water temp above 50 degrees. It was 55-57 where i caught the fish Friday, but my friend's bigger fish came from much cooler water. Also in the spring the sun becomes a factor heating up shallows where the fish can go to get warm.
