Twelve or 13-weight floating line question

Postby kendalloz » Sun Jul 21, 2013 5:20 pm

Hello all and thanks in advance. Looking for a 12-13-weight floater to cast big bulky flies in hot to cool conditions. Will not use it in winter cold water. Any suggestions? I need to replace a 12-weight line that broke in the running line last week with the drag set at 4 pounds.

Kendall,
Why not an Outbound Rio short floater tropical? Mine works very nicely and can throw heavy flies! Now, it works to 70 degrees water temp very well. It is 510 grams which should turn over your leader with a big fat fly.

If it's for sight casting to leader shy fish, the short may not be what you want.

you might look at the Rio Tarpon and go up a line size or two. There is a new Rio Tarpon line with a 60' head as well

Thanks all. I might try a tarpon up-sized and and an Airflo GT line with 80-pound core. I've broken a few Rio lines recently.

The running line in a 10-weight outbound short broke last week...drag was set on 4 pounds. I am rough on lines so it could easily have been damaged.
