I'm using the Navionics P+ (smaller version for NC). Decent detail and free updates for a year. A bonus, you can load a second SD card on the Lowrance to store custom/shared waypoints. I'm sure some of the others offer that as well, but it is a nice touch that my last model didn't have.

Also running the Navionics Platinum charts. Detail is very good. Platinum Plus XL3 card is sweet but close to $400. Gives you 3D viewing etc. etc.

I use a 50 lb dacron trolling line with a pan shaped, lead decoy-weight tied to it. Only two functions: accurate depth measurement, and type of bottom ... sand, rock, mud. Extreme Old School. :roll:
