I recommend a Nikon d40 dslr. It costs $450 with a lens and it will outperform any point & shoot. The great thing about the d40 is it flash syncs up to 1/500 of a second and that makes using fill flash outdoors a snap. For point and shoots I've had good luck with the tiny Canon digital ELPHS. All of the elphs are great just choose whichever one you find on sale. dpreview.com is a great source of camera reviews.
