Upper James 5/7

Postby woolybugger » Sat May 08, 2010 1:06 pm

Took the yak up to the James for an after work trip. Paddle about a mile upstream to my favorite spot and started with a #4 black woolybugger. Fishing was fair, but the fish were small caught 8 bass in 2 hours, all 9-12 inches. I'm hoping the bigger ones are still on the beds. Good news was that none of the fish showed the sores that have been killing fish the last few years. Also caught 5 big fallfish. Yeah, they are trash fish, but they do pull pretty good and they are an indicator of clean water, Used to never see them in the James, so I am glad they are there. Saw a deer, 5 woodies, an otter, 2 coons, and a bunch of geese with young. An awesome way to end a tough week at work.

Looks beautiful. A lot better then looking out the window at work at 40MPH gusts across the parking lot, every once in a while though the view got to be very nice IYKWIM.

is that a sore just starting on it's lower tail, or just normal wear and tear? Live in Rke, and used to fish the James practically every week, not so much the last few years...Took my young son last year in our driftboat and bought helgramites to keep his interest up... we were skunked and I was confused... Twenty years ago a good day was 100+..........Sad deal.....still beautiful to float though....

Above Narrow Passage. This little fish was spawning, so I hope that sore is from fanning the bed. I didn't notice it until I looked at the pic. There are some reports of sores this year, but I haven't seen any in two trips. Fishing definately isn't what it used to be. A good trip now for me is around 30 fish, and not nearly as many big ones as in the past. Still an awesome way to spend a day.
