Packing for Baja

Postby Cutter » Sat Jul 10, 2010 8:24 am

Well, it is raining cats and dogs here (finally), so I have inside chores to do. Among them is starting to think about what is going to Baja and how is it getting there.

Rods, reels, lines, flies, leaders...... I'm cool on that stuff. Clothes - non-issue.

But what is the current wisdom on rods and reels as carry on vs checked. I have a long, skinny bag that will hold 5 rods in tubes plus my reels, but will they let me get on the plane with that, or will I have to strip off 10000 yds of gelspun???

Any Baja-specific item I must have different than other trips?

Has TSA "ever" been able to prevent "a bad thing" from happening at the hands of "evil do-ers" ??

I will tell you what they have been successful at ... they are excellent at harassing the s@#t out of me.

I'm for "profiling" ... often and with great vigor. ;)

What about going down, Brian? If I something happened to the gear on the way back, it can be replaced, but on the way down..... that could be bad.

Heh Cutter....

I use to carry all the stuff on but even got grief in friendly PHL :?

I put my rods ...all 4 piecers in my pinky bag....no problem.....

Last year I think Todd lost his bag for a day...we all gave him stuff to fish.....no problems...

Get your computer set up for Skype so you can contact home....last year it worked 2 out of the 7 days...no electricity and then internet down but when it worked, it was great...oh yea...it only worked in my room... :D

Let me know if you want DA LIST....

Got lots of other lists
But I suspect I speak for all the Baja virgins in saying, I'd be delighted to get "DA LIST". Thanks E
Will cross check with my others. Anyone else have a folder in " My Documents" called "Lists"
Already have your fly list, the boss's fly suggestions, and Gary's fly list. Tying a lot. have many sardinas, tuxs, and crease flies. Need to add some flasy ones for dodos and sierras, and maybe a few big ones - being an optimist - for MAHRleen. May need a separate bag just for the flies!
Do you bring a little wire for leaders? or just use heavy fluoro for toothy ones?

everything I read about this place gets me more excited.

never needed any wire. the only billfish caught since i have been there was a stripey by Gary Bulla in the blind with a Tux. We occasionally see a sailfish maybe once or twice--kind of cool but little chance of catching them--rather have a rooster
