Brian,

O'wise one...

Your thoughts on why the sound fishing is so off this year for all species?

yes all the specks died last winter --freeze it happens every 4 or 5 years--
reds grew up and left. when the reds reach close to over the slot they leave and go join the adults pre-spawn population. In over 25 years of fishing the sounds we have had maybe 6 decent years on the reds--so i NEVER count on them. if you look at the good spawning years for reds it is when we have a hurricane --water salinity??

According to VIMS the late summer and fall hurricanes do cause a great redfish spawn. The reds spawn in the ocean. The little ones have to ride tides and currents to get inshore where they spend their first few years. The hurricanes basically blow all the baby reds inshore resulting in a great year class. It is not that the hurricane causes more young, but that the hurricane gives them all a free ride inshore so they get a head start. The hurricanes greatly increase the number of young that make it inshore.
